VP of Products at Stack Exchange, aka, Stack Overflow Coveted Associate #C800:0000
Previously, I was Founder/CTO of Allworx that achieved a respectable exit and in general think of myself as an Entrepreneur.
I like to work on and think about building businesses, market positioning and product strategy. Although, by training, I'm a Software Engineer, Hardware Engineer, Embedded systems and Networking Expert....and, oh yeah, a Corvette enthusiast.

Is capitalism really evil? How is your startup measuring success and promoting the common good? @Keith - The main issue I had with your question is that you start from an assumption that capitalism is evil or that there is a burden of proof that show that it is not. I don't think there is any facts in evidence showing capitalism is evil in any way that is specific to the nature of capitalism itself. Certainly, there have been bad and corrupt business people, but these people don't impugn the system nor are they unique to capitalism. In fact, generally speaking, it is the regulated impediments created against free markets that usually allow certain parties to gain undue leverage |

Multipliers for the VC exit I agree. The target minimum for analysis needs to see 10x return on cash in 5 years or a 20% IIR or higher for the duration of the investment. |

Multipliers for the VC exit I think 10x needs the be the demonstrated minimum for purposes of assumptions in the analysis. This translates into a 20% IIR (internal rate of return) per year for 5 years. |

Know any large/public software companies that are using freemium? Also, Microsoft SQL Server Express is free version of SQL Server. |

What states are the best/worse to have remote employees in? @Dane - I'll start by saying I am not a lawyer, but my understanding with the issue relative to full time consultants more relates to consultants sitting side by side with employees who have benefits, etc. The arguments went that these armies of consultants looked like employees and therefore were entitled to the same benefits as "defacto" employees. In CA specifically, there may have been other implications I'm not aware of that came into play (such as tax withholding or something like that), but I would think a remote person in another state with a specific skill is not a problem. |

Business / entrepreneurship / inspirational movies @Tim - I agree with your point, but I would add that Deep Water, I believe, is less about the fact that he lied, and more about the ways that got him sucked into his adventure to the point where he thought that lying was the only way out. That is, he wasn't even honest with himself and could not properly assess his own skills and figure out that he was really in over his head to the point that failure was a given. This leads to death - literally and/or figuratively. |
