How to propagate and fund business ideas by consumers @Jakob - reaching customers who are willing to pay is called "marketing" and is one of the most difficult parts (often the most difficult part) in creating a successful product. |

Under GPL, can I legally put my own logo & copyright, considering that I have made significant changes? @Mawg - no, from the gnu.org web site (emphasis mine): "the GPL requires you to make the modified source code available to the program's users" - anyone who has access to the binaries must be able to get the source for free, you are not required to give the source to the general public (BTW, the words "freely available" do not appear in any version of the GPL) |

How do I find a “techie” to help build a start up website? @DaveMateer - I disagree, 99.9% of ideas (I didn't say people) are not commercially viable and are not worth implementing at all (at least not as a business) - if you want me to take you seriously show me market research not mockups (actually, market research and mockups). |

Should I provide a trial version or a money-back guarantee? How much money do you want to make with this software? small niche at a low price will not result in a lot of money - take your monthly salary (or the salary you hope for) divide it by price minus processing fees – this is the number of new customers you have to get every single month (and we didn’t even takes marketing costs such as advertizing into account) |

While working on my startup, should I keep track of my time? @Alex - I had a hard time when I started, at the beginning you will forget to start and stop tracking - but if you don't give up at some point it will just become an habit |

Should I charge for my service or not? @Nick H - You have to be better (or at least different) than your competitors, that's true when they're charging money and even more true when they're free. that doesn't change the fact that online ads are a poor source of income unless you have lots of targeted traffic (btw, I sell software that has lots of free alternatives - and people still pay) |

CEO , what % of equity to give Just be aware that CEO is a big corp and CEO in a startup are two completely different things, a big name CEO with a strong background in big companies is likely to be completely useless in a startup - before hiring the CEO read this: bhorowitz.com/2010/04/28/why-we-prefer-founding-ceos than read everything else on that site. |

Need an idea for a logo Isn't one of the big advantages of sites like 99designs.com is that you can give them a description exactly like what you wrote here and have the graphic designers come up with ideas? |

First-time meeting with a VC and Angel Investor Investors don't like "if we had 1% of the market we would make xxx" because it makes you sound clueless, unless you have a realistic marketing and sales plan to actually reach and sell to more than 1% in a short time, in most markets getting 1% of all potential customers to buy is almost impossible (let's say I sell exercise equipment, every single person on earth has a body that needs exercise, now if I get just 1% of them to buy I'll be richer than bill gates) |

How to save a really bad AdWords account Their lowest option for monthly budget on the sign up form is $1000-$3000, I don't want to spend anything near $1000 until I can see some real ROI |

What skills should i get to start? @Andrew - I'm a software developer, if I were you I would try to outsource or use freelancers to create the product (no employees, no expenses you can't stop and since you are a tech guy you can evaluate the results they give you) and concentrate on marketing (put up a web site, drive traffic to that site, convince those people to buy). |

What skills should i get to start? @Andrew - I've started a software company alone while working a full time job (I work on my company nights and weekends) and I can tell you that most of what I learned about selling software before starting is irrelevant, highly exaggerated, lacks important details or just plain wrong - you can learn more in one month of doing than in a year of learning (also, the correct thing to do in a small company is often the opposite than in a large one), so, if you want to start a company - just do it - but it will cost more then you think and be profitable later then planned - so have some reserves |
