Why do big internet companies need thousands of “engineers”? Facebook claims to have "2000+" employees total (facebook.com/press/info.php?factsheet), so I don't think they have anywhere near that number of "engineers". |

UK Tax for Online Startup Software Company @Ben53 If you're incorporated in the UK, you only need to collect VAT from customers in the EU, so you won't need to add VAT to the price when selling to Americans (see hmrc.gov.uk/vat/managing/international/exports/goods.htm). But if you are VAT registered, you can still claim a refund on VAT you've paid. |

Where can I propose an open source project and collaborate on software requirements before starting to code? @boos Maybe you'll attract people before you start, but most successful open source projects start with somebody building something, even if it's not a complete solution, then other people get inspired to contribute to that. People will be more amenable to helping when they see that you are capable of delivering and have done some of the hard work already. I've seen lots of people attempt to build an open source team up front before starting the project, but I don't recall any that have been successful. Sometimes it's easier to get started with one person and a vision and then add to that. |

Where can I propose an open source project and collaborate on software requirements before starting to code? @boos Are you planning to make a business out of this idea? If not, you probably won't find much advice here. I understand why you want to get other people involved, I just think you may struggle to find people who want to work for nothing on somebody else's project unless you already have something to show. People who are motivated to create open source software follow their own whims. |

Reliable and inexpensive dedicated server @slatecaster A VPS is effectively a complete self-contained server. You can choose your own operating system and install whatever you want with full root access. The only difference between a VPS and dedicated hardware is that there is not a 1:1 mapping between "servers" and physical machines. The hosting company will run multiple VPS instances on single, high spec multi-processor machine. Your VPS gets a guaranteed chunk of memory, disk space and processor time. |

I am setting up a European Branch/Subsidary of a US based Software company. What is the best way to go for this? Switzerland is not in the EU. I don't know whether that would be an issue for you. Of course, it has other things going for it. You could make a case for any of the countries but I think Ireland should be near the top of the list. Geographically it's not central in Europe but it has financial advantages over the UK and, for a US company, language advantages over most of the other places. |
