How difficult (or how does one) apply for R&D Tax Credits (USA) for software development (new product)? @GaryE -That makes sense, but I am still interested in how difficult it is. And feedback from a few people (even one <g>) who have done it would be very helpful. If it's 30 hours of CPA time @ $200/hr then it's simply not worth spending a lot of time looking into. If it's 2 hours of CPA time and 1 hour of my time then that warrants spending my limited time on. |

Is there a cheaper way (than wire transfer) to pay someone internationally? I'll ask them but that seemed so obvious I figured they'd considered it. |

What “incubator culture” factors are critical to the success of a business incubator (or co-work environment)? I was mulling over my question last night with someone from local city government and I came to the same conclusion: you have to have some REALITY thrown in there. Some people have succeeded. They will be a role model and motivator. |

Hire a sales guy for a part-time start-up? And remember,no one cares about and undertands your product like you do. |

Hire a sales guy for a part-time start-up? SEO and Paid Search is not just for people "looking for your product". It's for people who have the pain your product solves. I think you'd get more bang for your buck from hiring someone for $1000 or $2000 for a couple of months to help you with your Paid Search (Adwords, etc.). |

Do I really need an accountant? My software company is 17 years old and we've never had an accountant, and never needed one. I do have the benefit that my wife (who is not trained in that) enjoys it and is quite good at it. There are lots of benefits to doing it yourself : you know your business much better than an accountant and it's cheaper in the long run if you have the time. If you have more money than time, then yes, hire an accountant to SET UP things for you. |

Is it appropriate to drop-in at a startup incubator? Having some sort of "in" or introduction is really helpful. You might also use something like LinkedIn to see if you know someone who knows someone. |

When (and why) should a small, niche company spend resources *promoting* Social Media Marketing rather than an email newsletter? Ryan you raised a good point, so I clarified: resources are limited. I have time to do what impacts my business. I have a long list of things that I KNOW will impact it (new products, updated website, email newsletter) in very measurable ways. I'm just trying to figure out how much benefit FB/G+/Twitter (F'GiT :) would produce so I can figure out how much time to take away from the other activities. |

When (and why) should a small, niche company spend resources *promoting* Social Media Marketing rather than an email newsletter? What do you mean by "engage your customer's social side"? can you provide a couple of examples (ideally real successes for small companies) ? |

Have the ideas, found the niche…what to do first? You can set their expectations by just being honest on that landing page: "We're working on the product. It's not available yet. We're looking for beta testers. Sign up below. |

Would you recommend SubscriptionBridge? And why? Turns out Subscription bridge has some show stoppers for us (which I think they are finally changing). Like, you couldn't include a single click link to Cancel your subscription. You had to copy your ID (which is in the email) and then click a link in the email and paste the ID.). |

At what rate are meals and hotels tax deductible for business trips? I'm married to accountant :). She's actually very sharp. I should have said "she said, and I've not asked her how sure she was". I asked again and she's 100% positive about the meals being 50%. I'm sure she'd be thrilled to find out it's at 100%. PLEASE PROVE ME WRONG :) |

At what rate are meals and hotels tax deductible for business trips? Hmmm... My accountant (who is certain of this) said that meals on travel are deductible as a business expense at only 50%. the rationalis that you'd need to eat anyway but it's 2x as expensive so they let you expense the incremental cost. |

What are the top problems (and solutions if they exist) with outsourcing software development overseas? Good find on the free book. It's rated reasonably well on Amazon (4*'s). It's got a lot of fluff and narrative but (after 30m of reading) does have some good material, like comparing the cultures of various countries. And so far that part gels with what I have experienced and been told by people I trust with first hand knowledge. |

Outsourcing marketing I think it depends on the complexity of the sale. I.e., if you're selling an iPad app that lets your iPad act like a Level then there is almost zero complexity and it can work with Affiliate marketing. (Disclose: I have 17 years marketing experience but almost zero experience with Affiliate marketing: our product is too complex for affiliate marketing. |

Outsourcing Development +1 for gaining a technical co-founder (that you trust completely!) and some technical knowledge of your own. |

Customer claims they have been charged twice over a year ago Note that this time-limit is 12 months for Am Ex. (I know this from painful experience with a nutty customer. Even the Amex people said she was being unreasonable. With AmEx they can request a chargeback every month for up to a year. |
