I am an entrepreneur, with lots of academic and some real world experience.

These days I am building a new company in the mobile app monetization space.

comment At what point should we apply to an incubator?
I haven't applied to an incubator, but from what I saw, they are looking for a team rather then an idea (since ideas change, but the team is what is important). If that is true, it doesn't matter when you apply. There is a good chance its not true, but there is no way to know. You might as well send them an email, telling them that you are considering applying, and you want to know if its too early or not. They shouldn't penalize you for asking, and if they do, you probably don't want to work with them anyway :)

Glad to help! I just came across Gigya, which might provide the solution you are looking for: youtube.com/watch?v=mZeWUctkblY I haven't used them myself, but they seem to have the social layer figured out very well (including, but not limited to the login process)

comment Andorid app, on what horse should I bet
Here is some real data regarding advertising: makingmoneywithandroid.com/2011/05/… As for the 600K downloads resulting in $60K, that is because of piracy... If all the downloads were from the app store, it would be $0.69 for each download, since apple does take a 30% cut Anyway you look at it, its hard to make money in this business (my start-up aims to help that problem, but I won't go into that here since self promotion is frowned upon in this community )

comment Register options for a new social media application
Creating a new social graph when FB already has 800M users (500M of which are happy enough with it to use it every day) seems very hard. It is much more likely that I will see my FB friends doing something then friends on your new site. Yes, you can import address-books and mass invite friends, but social is just a layer, it shouldn't be the focus. Focus on your service rather then on competing on the users attention against FB.

What kind of app are you looking to market? in which market? What is your business model? Without more information, giving you answers would be rather useless to you.

comment Does Lean startup work in Mobile?
Another option I heard from a friend is submitting your app for only some marketplaces, as a way to get testing done on a smaller audience before launching in the US... I guess that once I realized how great lean is on the web, the fact that it doesn't work as fast on mobile seems not as good now... Its like getting a slow internet connection on a flight - once you get used to something good, you come to expect it :) btw, I am now following you on twitter

Please contact me, as I am very interested in your app, but in a discussion that is not relevant to onstartups.com (I would rather not get flagged or voted down). (contact me at ron @ (my domain, listed on my profile)

Glad to be of assistance :) Your immediate competitors are t-shirts sold at the bookstores you mentioned, as well as clothing stores near the campus itself...

comment How to evaluate risks?
If you don't get paid enough for the project to be worth while, then its not a good project. Experience and reputation you gain should be considered in addition to money, but if the whole package is not worth while, then its not a good project. If it is worth while only if it doesn't go over budget, try to minimize the risk with a good contract. You can try to do stress tests and other risk related calculations, but I think that minimizing the risk is the way to go.

Lean start-up is great for web development, but is hard to implement in mobile apps (very hard to iterate) See here: answers.onstartups.com/questions/32710/…

comment Does Lean startup work in Mobile?
I have considered a web based solution, but in my app, I believe that I will succeed or fail based on good UI/UX, and a web-based solution just won't cut it (HTML5 or not, its still not native in speed or feel)

comment Does Lean startup work in Mobile?
I am limited to 100 beta testers (thanks to apples policy) which is no where near enough for split testing (the functionality I need to test is related to e-commerce, which means that maybe one out of the 100 will buy anything, once, if I am lucky). Also, even with TestFlight (which is a great service) its still a headache to update each version (its not like updating a website) What can I do once the app goes live? Can I still iterate? Split test?

comment Are Microsoft and Google dead, or is Roger McNamee wrong?
Interesting insight regarding the need for and difficulties in business apps! Since software is now moving to the could (SaaS and such), HTML5 seems like if would make those solutions even more powerful. I am still not sure if enterprise is big enough when compared to social... LinkedIn might be able to charge for premium services, but Facebook is much larger. Same for BlackBerry vs iPhone.

The end of the lecture is very much related to my start-up, since my product will be similar to his vision regarding affiliate market sales done from within the current website using HTML5 (rather then taking the users out of the current website). In general, this is related to trends that affect most start-ups, so asking what people are thinking about these trends seems like a relevant question. I didn't want to ask "this is my business model, what do you think" since that would be advertising my start-up...

I agree that for work, PCs are better then tablet or laptops these days, but that is mostly for two reasons: 1) They are more powerful, and cloud based services still don't run as fast as local applications on weaker computers 2) The ultimate input device for work is still the keyboard - tablets don't have them and laptops are two small to be comfortable. That being said, you have 1B PCs in the world and 4B phones (which are getting smarter) so they dominate. You can lead your life on a Pad and still work on a PC at the office. The tech that needs disrupting here is the keyboard.

Great insight there! Is there a blog where you go into the two page rant? I would love to read it :) I agree with most of what you said. I think that HTML5 still has a long way to go, but I do expect it to be adopted by artists, like the old flash art when it just came out (though youtube replaced most of that, it is less interactive). Also, flash is dead in mobile, and mobile is king... What do you think of his closing statements, about how you will be able to buy a book in a widget without leaving the recommending site? Will this replace the affiliate marketing method?
