I'm a C# developer focused on developing Free and Open Source Software under OSI approved licensing while I go to school full time, and work a full time job as an Operations Team Manger for a call center.

I'm a co-founder/Lead Architect of a small group of self taught, non formalized education, developers looking to bring free software to businesses and individuals. We're currently developing 2 different projects, one is a business solution and the other a solution for the individual.

Because each app is different, even if there are 3 apps doing the same thing, their sales will be different. It's not really a good bearing on analysis.

Where are you looking to target this at first? I personally wouldn't want to launch this as a huge effort, test it in a larger city to see if it works, that way you don't invest too much. Please edit with a little more details of your target location so we can give you a good answer.

comment Creating Continuous Income through real estate rentals?
+1 you're absolutely right. Many people that run these types of businesses have invested significant amounts of money into their properties. Generally they're all paid off already as most lenders are hesitant to give a mortgage if you already have a mortgage, let alone dozens (which you will need to have any sense of profit.) I have a friend that is doing this and he usually holds the houses for a few years then sells them for a profit, using the rent to cover costs such as the management agency and ads. Doing this on about 24 homes he makes a nice steady income of about $75k or so a year.

I have never personally heard of anything like this. Likely it doesn't exist unless a company that develops the app publishes the information. And in reality, there is really nothing that says just because app A made X amount, and App B made Y amount, that your App will make Z amount. Apps are a crap shoot.

comment Does expensive software need trial download?
Generally company's that are at a 50k price point aren't catering to the types of company's that a free downloadable trial is going to help. They're catering to large company's that require courtship and a badass sales team.

+1 for the last part. If you're going to do it, you negotiate it during the sales phase and offer a discount in return for being able to use their logo.

comment Is consulting work subject to my day-job's intellectual-property clause?
@SteveJones I agree. I work for a company that has the same clause. They modified it for me to say that as long as it's not something I do based on knowledge of a product or idea at the company I work for (including our clients, etc.), I do it on my time, and off company property, and not with company property (i.e. company purchased VS license) than I retain the rights to do as I please. If the company likes it they even require in it that they purchase a license for it! It's all about being up front and honest.

When I see something like 49.95 I just round it to 50 in my head anyway.

Studies show it does make a difference, otherwise everything in the store wouldn't be priced that way.

Not only that, staying in school will help you land a job if/when your startup fails.
