provisional patent application @jimg I also don't understand what the Paris Convention has to do with this. It is entirely unclear whether the questioner is even interested in a patent in his home country. I hold only US patents, but I am not a resident, and I couldn't care less whether my patents are enforceable in my home country. |

provisional patent application Can you give an example of such a country? I've never heard of this before. For example, most multinationals will file patents in the US for inventors employed overseas, owned by some low-tax Bermuda company, and they are usually not breaking the law. |

Can startup funding cover founder's personal expenses? I'd say the opposite. If you are not taking out any salary, then all your personal expenses are in a moral (but not accounting) sense equity in the company and should be regarded as such when negotiating with the VC. |

Offshore Patent I think this is not correct. If only one requirement in a system described in a patent is done outside of the US, then you are not in violation of the patent. The patent system is designed for physical things where this is impossible to circumvent, but for digital services, it is possible. IANAL. |

I will live in 0% income tax zone, and my service is provided online, will I be obligated to pay any tax Withholding tax is not relevant in your situation - you will have invoices crossing the border, not profits. Typically what you need to avoid are two things: 1) Physical presence, and 2) Significant revenues from the US. If you earn more than XXX whatever in a country, that country might compel you to file paperwork, and when you find yourself in that situation, physical presence is often easier, because then you do not have to have your UAE company file paperwork in the US, rather you have a subsidiary do that, which can result in overall less paperwork. |

Company formation for a non-resident – Delaware LLC and London LTD I think you're missing the non-resident LTD UK company. You can incorporate in the UK, and operate in the other european country where you are resident. This is often beneficial, since the LTD will sometimes not be subject to stringent laws that apply to the "default" company type in the country where you operate. For example, in the Nordic countries, it is very common for carpenters to be operating as a UK LTD, because they can distribute profits on a monthly basis, they get the social benefits of an employee, the capital requirements are smaller, and accounting is simpler. |

How to document transfer pricing policy for IP Thanks for the answer. It would have been great to get some numbers, any numbers, on this. I feel that it must be really hard for the taxman or me to put a value on IP in a startup setting. |

Start UK-based company as a foreign This is for a UK limited company that is trading in the UK. You can also register a non resident company in which case you do not pay taxes in the UK. This can be very convenient for a number of reasons. |
