I am a software engineer in Pittsburgh, PA with a focus on architecture, design and development of solutions in both Java and .NET technologies.
I recently helped a friend build a website for a business he is starting. http://www.championkitchens.com

What do I need to do to maintain an LLC's limited liability protection? A friend of mine is a CPA, and he informed me that the only consequence of not filing quarterly estimates on your taxes is typically a very small penalty. |

Focus of limited resources, Marketing vs. Product Developmentstable, solid and cyclic I like that and I think I might use it! Can I credit you with this phrase or did you borrow it from an article or book? |

Is it normal to have 0 signups after pitching a startup to dozens of journalists? The trouble with the Internet and cloud computing in their current form is everyone and their dog can throw up a web application/site/something. You make it sound like it is easy. It's not, it takes a lot of skill and hard work. The reason why it seems this way is because it is so much cheaper to do than it was 14 years ago. This is what led to the rise in garage software development shops. |

Off Shore vs “Self Development” @RobWalling I agree that implementation of software takes significantly more time. My point was that good implementation of software is significantly easier than good design, architecture, and project management. Not every developer can produce quality design, but most developers can implement it if given the appropriate guidance. |

Off Shore vs “Self Development” The time to make sure that the software is implemented correctly in proper documentation, communication, coordination and review still takes up time even if coding is done by someone else. The coding is the easy part. |

Off Shore vs “Self Development” @BhargavPatel I agree with this sentiment, and disagree about losing control of core business. If you remain in control of functional and design specifications then you are in still control. The big challenge with offshoring is communication, and it does impact the quality of the software that the offshore team produces. Language, time zone, and cultural differences lead to miscommunication and then software is delivered that doesn't meet user needs. |

What social media accounts should a business have? An extra page of what? If you want web presence then a website is mandatory. Social media should be your next consideration. I hear people talking about Pintrest a lot lately, it may be worth looking to see if Pintrest can help get your name out there. |

Inventing a simple medical device and getting a patent before talking with a medical device builder I see, it is just an unfortunate name. She wants to patent the design of a utilitarian device. She needs a Utility patent :) |

Inventing a simple medical device and getting a patent before talking with a medical device builder I thought about that but then I read on their website that Provisional Patents are not allowed for Design Patents, only Utility Patents. Wouldn't this be a Design Patent? |

Inventing a simple medical device and getting a patent before talking with a medical device builder We could possibly build a limited prototype with some scrap steel and stuff from the hardware store. One part though will probably require a skilled welder. As long as the atty has a modicum of imagination though then yeah its possible. |

Inventing a simple medical device and getting a patent before talking with a medical device builder Interesting idea about contracting an engineer and having him sign an NDA. That might be worth it because it shouldn't be hard to sketch up in AutoCAD. |

Inventing a simple medical device and getting a patent before talking with a medical device builder Thanks for the great answer! This is also one of those things that a hospital may only want one or two of, and it would be relatively cheap I would think. It certainly isn't one of those ideas that will make you rich, but I am sure it could make some decent money on royalties though, we just need to figure out if the returns are worth the potential risk. I am still not sure how much a patent will cost. I have heard anywhere from $200 to $20k. |

Is 50/50 partnership in an LLC a good idea when partner has idea and money? Thanks for the input! Since this question was posted things have been relatively smooth and I am more actively interested in the project than ever before. We have had several sit downs since then and have never made a split decision yet. If he is all about control then he hasn't shown this aspect yet. He seems to realize I am more creative than he is and welcomes my ideas and input. He told me that the last thing he wants is to get in the way of my process and the way I do things. Hopefully things stay smooth but if it starts making money then you know how money can poison things. |
