As a recent work-from-home dev who started his own consultancy I Have to say it depends on two things: 1) What your software skills are in. If you know JS / CSS / HTML5 or mobile (either HTML5, Java for Android, or Objective-C for iPhone) then you can pretty much find any contract job on your terms. Nodejs, Mongo, Redis - these all our super hot right now and there's not enough developers that know them. If you're more into .Net or something then it may be better sticking with a single employer. 2)Your location. SF Bay area for example is hot with tech and easy to land interesting gigs.

One thing to add here is that while your're busy chugging away at writing the app your partner can help handle business aspects and client interactions - including, eventually support. In the long term, there will be plenty for him to do until you start hiring more people while you work on new features and bug fixes.
