comment How can I ensure my freelance developers are writing good code?
Thanks so much for the clarification, knowing what to search for was a huge help. So I read a couple good articles, and came to the conclusion (wrong though it may be), that my app is probably to small to necessitate having a "test plan" or doing unit tests right now. The functionality is just too straightforward at this point and I can within 30 seconds test all variations of actions myself. Is it typical to only implement something like these tests once your app reaches a certain degree of complexity?

I haven't heard of tests like this, can you explain In very layman terms? Is it a script created? Who writes the specs for this? How is the test executed and where are results shown?

comment Do I need a CMS or should I build from scratch?
Thanks, that's actually where I'm at right now. Doing it cheap and dirty with freelancers, but it works. I have found a fit, and am at the point where I rebuild it now

I very much appreciate your answer. I've also been looking at frameworks. Which one has the largest userbase, most documentation etc.

comment Not an IT person at all and I want to start an online based company- any advice?
You may not have the experience now, but it really shouldn't take long to learn what you need. Spend a few hours a day focusing on learning the basics of the technology you will use, learn all about UX, subscribe to tech blogs, and read books from startup founders. You may be interested in reading up on this startup weddinglovely.com. It was built and run by a few (young) women.

So if I'm understanding the question, you think it will be successful because of how "complicated or 'in-depth' and personalized" the site will be, but what I'm suggesting in building only a small portion of it seems counter-intutive. Is that right? I would recommend reading a book called "Getting Real" by the guys at 37 signals. When it comes to building a web app, less is more in the beginning. By the way, a year ago I was right where you are, and have learned a ton. If you want to talk on skype or something, shoot me an email. I'm happy to give you advice. moc.liamtoh@4242llahj

comment Does anyone know of golfcentric angel investors?
I think if you want to present this in a way that an investor will respect, you need to first show your marketing budget, and how you intend to market to X number of customers. That's your starting point. Investors need to see that you can first "reach" customers before selling to them. I'm certain you have a solid little niche of golfers that are interested, but the most valuable thing you can explain is how to reach them, and for how much money.
