Ancient times: Classic ASP, wrked at the Library of Congress to answer the Ultimate Geek Question
Olden times: more ASP, lots of Java, some PHP, a little Rails
Recent times: lots of PHP, co-founded web2project, started working with php|architect
Now: I work for Twilio where we work towards world telephony domination and then lead web2project and OpenVBX
Also: I've worked with startups ranging from a founding member to being a late stage employee. My personal strength is with groups and products in backend business/operations systems.

Comparing Investments: Selling land vs. starting a business What are you optimizing for? Starting a business - any business - comes with risk. You can't count on anything.. even if you have signed contracts in hand. If you want risk-free cash now, sell the land. If you want long term cash flow and know what you're doing with a business and the market works out, maybe the business makes sense. As is, this sounds more like a homework question than an actual scenario. |

What is a lean startup and why should I go this route? A one-line explanation: Applying the scientific method to company/product development: ask a question, form a hypothesis, perform a test, analyze the results, goto 1. |

Operational email policy If they've signed up for a system, that changes the rules a bit. Generally in the sign up process there's some sort of "I want to get messages about X" checkbox pre-checked. Whether Opt In vs Out by default is correct is another matter. |

Solving the chicken and egg problem: how to attract paying customers Were you at Startup Weekend Houston this past weekend? I was a mentor. If you were there, feel free to drop me a note to discuss this one in detail. I have some ideas in relation to that particular effort. |

Pricing for Onshore/Offshore Product Development I voted to close this one as it is so vague as to be not useful.. Adding a country, industry specifics, what regulatory aspects might apply, complexity of the projects (WordPress theme hacking vs API design), or anything along those lines would help. |

Should initial contribution or future contribution determine equity stake? Also, it's worth noting that having a vesting agreement is key as it would have prevented and/or given you approach to the current issue. |

There's a troll in my space - now what? On the plus side, they won't go after someone until a) they notice the company and b) they think the company has enough money to make it worthwhile.. so if you make it far enough to get sued, congrats! |

What is a good model to use to estimate membership growth over time for a dance video tutorial website? Using one combination doesn't give you an accurate picture either. Maybe it's "dance training videos" or looking for a specific kind of dance or just "dance classes" or a variety of others. Don't assume the user will use the same terms you do. |

Payment methods and conditions for fresh startup If you go for the call option, make sure it covers your rate plus some. Remember, there's a time value to money. If someone offers to pay you $100 today or $100 six months from now, they are significantly different. That $100 now could be invested to have $100+N by the end of six months. Your call option should reflect that. |
