Do you have any qualifiers? Is this for analyzing user behaviour of a web app or a public website? Do you have heavy ajax interaction or no? Do you have a preference on paid or free tools? – Joseph Fung Dec 22 '09 at 13:45

Make sure you leverage Google Optimizer to run some multivariate testing on your landing page. That done, frankly, Google is your best choice given the cost. You aren't going to get much more out of more sophisticated platforms UNLESS you have a complex measure of conversion.

That is, if you are valuing more than one metric: sales PLUS newsletter registrations PLUS referrals, etc. (which you should be doing) than Google doesn't really cut it. Take a look at KISSmetrics.

You can try Mouseflow if you want an alternative to Clicktale and a great supplement to Google Analytics. It is relatively cheap and has both recording/replay and heatmap analysis.

I think that statsCounter is not a bad tool (besides google) but still looking for better ones :)

You're talking about two completely different tools - clicktale isn't an analytic tool but a testing tool. I'd second Pauls option - using google optimizer is good to do some multivariate landing page testing is a good low cost test to check for conversion.

clicktale (or crazyegg for that matter) can provide clickstream resolution playback to give better heatmaps.

Or - take a look at woopra - more real time analytics than google - still free for some uses.

There is Omniture (recently acquired by Adobe) in the high end.

I have an allergy for websites that require me to fill a 50 field questionnaire in order for me to deserve being told what their products can do (e.g."product tour"). – ron M. Jan 30 '10 at 3:58

Omniture is an amazing application. It has grown in the last couple of years and is really becoming an all-in-one solution for analytics integration. They just recently released v14.7 of SiteCatalyst. Read more here: http://eugeneorourke.com/blog/omniture-announces-new-versions-of-sitecatalyst-and-discover/

I think, also use http://www.shinystat.com/. They are web analytical provider. I've tried them and found it good small business resource for the entrepreneurs.

Thank you for contributing an analytics suggestion, but please don't include unrelated self-promotion links in your answers. I've removed that link from your answer. The best way to bring attention to your site is to include it in your profile, and provide additional useful answers. :-) – Jay Neely Apr 12 '10 at 23:41

hubspot has some good analytics and conversion tools built in.

Indeed you are talking about two different tools: but basically you are both just looking at the stats or behavior or the users, so in that way there the same. I think you next step is DO SOMETHING.

So a testing tool will be next to actually do A/B testing. You can try Google Website Optimizer for basic test of different versions of pages. Get some experience with that and see if you can actually use the things you saw in both tools your currently using.

FoxMetrics is a new real time web analytics tool that tracks web audience, custom events, and in the new future, we will provide more powerful tools such as A/B tests, heat maps, segmentation, funnels and more. Its fun and provides actionable data. It was launched quietly in beta, you can sign up now and start using it.

Piwik is a great tool. It does all your analytics work and has a plugin for everything, including heat maps and so on. It really kicks butts.

I have just launch my new service - SumoOptimize. Its currently in private beta mode and I sincerely hope that you are willing to give it a try and provide us feedback on the improvement needed. (Its free).

Of course, I will say it may not be as powerful or famous as any other services provided by other users currently. But SumoOptimize will be improving its features day by day.

Just a quick introduction of what SumoOptimize is about:

It's a website optimization service providing users easy to use tool to manage and monitor their A/B test. A/B test allows you to compare which version (layouts, formats, text) of the website is most appealing to the visitors. By using SumoOptimize, you can easily customize the elements such as text, layouts, images, and colors of the website in the test. Once the test is launched, you are able to monitor the performance of the different elements in the test in SumoOptimize. By tracking and comparing the A/B tests, you are able to ensure the best website format is being served to their visitors.

There is a very good Open Source Application called PIWIK. It is made to serve as a free clone for Analytics. I think it has overtaken Google Analytics meanwhile.

It can be installed on any host running PHP/MySQL.

Here is the URL: http://www.piwik.org/
