I recently created a booking/scheduling app. targeting independent instructors (e.g. Music, sports, academic, etc). I'm having a hard time finding online communities/blogs/Meetup groups where I can find such individuals in groups and efficiently get the word out about my application and get some testers to sign up and provide some feedback. Any suggestions on where I should turn?

Also, since I'm not an instructor, how should I go about this in my e-mails without coming off like spam?

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

This is a tough one - I made such an app back in 1991 or so. I never was able to sell it. Had only one customer - the person who originally asked me to write a scheduling app - he was a speech therapist and worked for a school district - he needed a scheduling app. – TimJ Dec 22 '09 at 6:36
I'll agree with you there. The needs vary from instructor to instructor. In fact, this is the second time I've tried to build this myself. This time, I've kept it to some very basic features that I believe will appeal to most instructors. But still, you may be right and this may be a bust. That's why I'm looking for some testers. – Abid Ali Dec 22 '09 at 6:40

Could you start out with local instructors? Make some phone calls and do a face-to-face demo. You'll get more feedback that way on the application. You could even give a few of them a discount for referrals.

+1 - Going to a local college would be your best bet, and would have been my answer. Since the OP works finding people that teach in the evening or on the weekends may be the best option. If he can get just show it to a few people, some very helpful comments may come out of this. – James Black Jan 6 '10 at 8:07

Maybe work through a channel that is already connected to many instructors.

For example, The Learning Tree or The Learning Annex (forgot the name) or companies like that.

Unfortunately, I think most of these companies offer their own solutions. – Abid Ali Dec 22 '09 at 16:30

That's a good app. Just a try:

  1. A long and laborious process but, I think it will work - try searching top sites of your country's local online classifieds and
  2. Yahoo answers.

Jeff, that is my backup plan. Reason why it's not the primary plan is because I have a day job and calling up people and setting up time to go over the app. could be very time consuming. But you're right, I could definitely get some good feedback that way.

You should have any updates, such as this, be in your question, not as answers to your own question. – James Black Jan 6 '10 at 8:05

Regarding competition, Hourville probably does something similar.

Have you searched through Craigslist to find listings of independent instructors? If you are in search for a personal instructor, where would you look? I think you would Google with specific terms "independent italian tutor" or something like that. Try those phrases and see what comes up. I am sure if you spend enough time on Google, you'll at least identify a few people to talk to.

The next step is to just cold call them. This is very difficult for most people to do, but is the easiest way to get in touch with your potential customers. Though cold call has a negative connotation associated (none of us want to receive unsolicited phone calls), if you are nice about it, it does produce results. Be honest with them and let them know that you are asking for their feedback. Once they figure out you are not pushing a product on to them, people are surprisingly nice at times (from personal experience of cold calling).

My main point is, you need to talk to as many customers (independent instructors) as possible, and as early on as possible. Incorporating early feedback is the best way to make sure you are building something that your customers will actually find beneficial.

So get the phones going. It's hard and time consuming, but is the best way to get quality information that will save you a lot of trouble in the future. If you can't do this during regular weekday hours, see if weekends will work. Since these are independent instructors, I presume they will take your call during a Saturday morning as well.

Jagath,

The first thing I did was go to Craigslist. There are dozens of instructors there posting ads every single day. Unfortunately, contacting them is against Craigslist's TOS and I can understand why, even though I feel like I would be offering a worthwhile product.

It seems I can't avoid the phone calls :-) Thanks for some great, specific ideas on how to go about doing those. I'll give it a shot and see how it goes.

As opposed to contacting them, why not post your own ad on Craigslist? – Joseph Fung Dec 24 '09 at 12:30
I'll give that a try and see what kind of reaction I get. – Abid Ali Dec 28 '09 at 18:20
