Hello all I'm looking for platform or niche market to start to develop add-ons or plug-ins to it. Something that's suitable for single developer -- what would you recommend? ( I don’t care which subject/domain )

You're going about this the wrong way. (IMO)

You should be finding things YOU are interested in. If you're not interested then it is just another job and you might as well be flipping burgers or mowing lawns. (not that there's anything wrong with that)

I know this is not the answer you are looking for, but don't take advice from other people about what work you should be doing in your free time/for your startup.

Develop something that you want to use yourself. Even if you start with some simple app. For example, if you have a mobile device and you have bought an app for it, or are thinking of buying an app, why not figure out how to develop that yourself? Even if it is a horrible implementation, you will have learned something about the domain and the platform. Keep searching in areas you have interest in. Many successful software companies were started this way - either they built something that they needed and could not find elsewhere, or they built something because they loved the domain/had a hobby.

I agree completely with Tim; by sticking with what YOU are interested in, you will be able to stay motivated and focused when you're pulling an all-nighter or it seems like you'll never find a customer. – cdjaco Oct 18 '10 at 21:56

Facebook, iPhone, Android, Twitter, Wordpress, Magento Commerce, Firefox, Google Wave, etc.

I agree with Tim, there are so many options, most anything could be a good starting point.

Just find something you like, even if someone has developed it already, and see about modifying it, to make it better. Then, as you change it you may find that there are other changes you can make, and soon you have a new product.

Then, once you have something that is differentiated, then you can look at using the Customer Development concept, http://steveblank.com/2009/11/23/customer-development-past-present-future/, and get trackable feedback from users, to continue to make it meet the needs of others.

It should be something you can be passionate about, as it will consume much of your time, but, it should be enjoyable to you.

Although, I agree with Tim, I think asking the question is still noteworthy. Someone here may have advice on a growth market and that could be the industry this person is after. If you're looking to start from scratch, I'd say to go for a growth market... unless money isn't of concern and you just want experience (but I say you should combine the two).

Having said that, I'd say you should look at developing apps on the Android. It's a huge growth market and a lot of carriers are picking it up. If it proves a success, go after the iPhone. The reason I start with android is not only because it is gaining a lot of momentum, but because it's very open. Apple has very strict approval rules. Feel free to let me know if you'd like to talk about this more.

How many people use Android phones these days? – jpartogi Dec 1 '09 at 5:29
im not looking for experience (i have more then 10 years experience ) im looking for money to go solo in my life – Meir Dec 1 '09 at 7:59
jpartogi, not many are using an android-powered device "these days." But in the coming months/years, you'll see it a lot more. And I mean a lot. HTC is making hardware for it, Motorola is, and so are several other companies. I've read several articles pointing to this (BusinessWeek and others). iPhone is stuck to one carrier, android is using on many (currently Verizon/T-mobile) @unknown, gotcha. In that case, I'd definitely invest your time on something noteworthy like the android. – Matt Dec 1 '09 at 17:04
