I am looking for inspiring stories of startups where the employees who got ESOPS in the beginning made millions when the company became successful. For example, Infosys is well known example. Any other that I can rely upon ? Any references-details about such stories would help.

Facebook is also one of the example.

Dell and Google I know for certain.

Any Fortune-100 tech company has a good chance of being an example too.

P.S. In general it is an extreme exception that people get so rich off ESOPs that they never have to work again.

Yes - I wanted to make the same point about this being the extreme exception cases. People getting "rich" off ESOP's is a statistical anomaly. It certainly happens, but it is kind of like playing the lottery and winning. Even in successful businesses, it is much more likely the top value of ESOPs is something like 1 years salary after 10 years and in effect a bonus of sorts. The book "High Tech Startup" sites the average FOUNDER return of SUCCESSFUL businesses to "only" about $2M/founder. Any employee with ESOP is doing way way less than that. – Tall Jeff Nov 27 '09 at 16:30

Microsoft is the canonical example.
