What should a company do before they switching their domain name? (In my example it's a small change in the name like DropBox's getdropbox.com to dropbox.com)

I'm thinking about writing a blog post and newsletter to inform the customers about the domain change. Any other things?

I'm not shure if I've understood your question... What do you mean by "do before"? You mean technically changing the domain name? You mean marketing anouncing it? You mean changing as the reflection of a new business positioning? – Fernando Martins Apr 25 '12 at 10:23
Google just made a blog post about this, some good information here googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com.au/2012/04/… – Joel Friedlaender Apr 26 '12 at 4:01

You should have both domains.

Next, you must switch to serving your site on dropbox.com and create 301 redirection from getdropbox.com to dropbox.com

Before you add this 301 redirection, check that everything works great on new domain, maybe site have static references to old domain.

And keep the old name forever. The cost is small. – mhoran_psprep Apr 25 '12 at 12:37
