Answers OnStartups is a question and answer site for entrepreneurs looking to start or run a new business. It's 100% free, no registration required.

My question may be really simple, yet I can not find the answer.
What is your opinion about the most appropriate top-level domain for a personal resume that the address will be printed in a business card ?

I guess an online resume is really important nowadays and might be the first step to collaborate with others or just get a plus from some valued people like investors.

Downvoter please explain. – Nikolai Oct 29 '11 at 14:22
I'm having a hard time linking this question to startups. I didn't downvote, but that is probably why it was downvoted. Can you clarify your question? What is the purpose of having an online resume? Are you looking for a job at a company? Or perhaps you are a freelancer or consultant, and looking for clients? – Zuly Gonzalez Oct 29 '11 at 22:36
Why doesn't using LinkedIn work for you? That's what I would use. – Zuly Gonzalez Oct 29 '11 at 22:40

Voted to close because it's not relevant to startups. – Joel Friedlaender Oct 30 '11 at 9:17

I'm the one who down voted and I apologize for forgetting to leave a comment. I downvoted because, frankly, this is a silly question. There are a million more important things to worry about in getting a job than what URL to use for your personal web site. No hiring person is going to go to your website to find your resume. You need to put your resume in their hands, either by email, paper mail, or some other means. Instead, spend your time on the substance of your resume and cover letters and networking with the right people. The question is also off topic. – Kekito Oct 30 '11 at 13:49

I would always go for .com ... people expect it. No harm in buying .me too .. but only do that if the .com version (or permutations thereof) is not available.

Make sure that people can type the domain in easily. I can remember only one .me domain name of a professional speaker.... otherwise If you were to ask me to find a website of someone... I'd type the person's name in to the url bar and add .com at the end.

If you understood how to market yourself you could increase your rates / pay for sure. Most people have no idea how to market themselves. It's foolish to got for a .info or a .me when no one looks. When I can go to odesk and get great resources for $5-$20 a hour I think most people will need all the help they can get. Keep the down votes coming. Loving it. This question is actually not relevant - This is a site about start-ups not personal websites. – Sunil Oct 29 '11 at 3:24

This is good advice. Downvoters please explain. – Kekito Oct 29 '11 at 3:50
But this will be a personal resume I can't find a reason why I should market it. It will be printed in a business card. – Nikolai Oct 29 '11 at 14:23
If you're printing on a business card is that not marketing? – Sunil Oct 29 '11 at 15:15

Wikipedia says

.me is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Montenegro.

Since it's a country code TLD and not a generic TLD, so I'd avoid it even though it might appear to be more cool than other options, as it falls under some other jurisdiction (unless you are in that country).

.info is good but I'll recommend going with .com if you want to build personal website which is more than just your resume.

even though it's offically a country code, it is marketed as a generic TLD since a couple of years ago, examples: fb.me, me.me. – Itai Sagi Oct 31 '11 at 10:29
