I'm working on a voting website that allows people to run elections using ranked-choice voting. Everything is currently free and without advertising, and I'm considering the best ways to monetize it.

Since I will be sending an email to every voter, I thought it would be good to place an ad at the bottom of each email. However, it looks like Google Adsense doesn't allow this.

Any suggestions for adding ads to emails or otherwise monetizing them?

That's a sure way for people to opt out of the emails/service. – TimJ Aug 2 '11 at 14:18
@Tim, are you suggesting that all ad-supported services don't work? I think others have shown that this can be successful. – Kekito Aug 2 '11 at 14:24
I am saying that that is one of the things that will get me to click unsubscribe immediately. If you want to do it then go for it. I have never, ever bought something or gone to a website of anything that was in the bottom of an email. – TimJ Aug 2 '11 at 15:02

I think you should go for it but the adds should link to another website of yours, or a specific page on your site.

However, that should be in connection with what you do. If the recipient was not interested in your e-mail, hey may be in another thing you offer...

My primary interest is to earn some revenue to support myself (e.g., through ads or some other means). P.S., I didn't downvote you. – Kekito Aug 2 '11 at 14:16
