I am an immigrant in the US on student visa. I cannot afford lawyers at this point. I want to set up an LLC, since it makes more sense to me. Any ideas as to how to maneuver the legal aspects? I am planning to start restaurant business.

avvo.com is a Q&A-like site where lawyers answer basic questions and get rated. LinkedIn answers is also a good place to check.

Basic LLC setup is very straightforward, especially if you have zero capital. Read up on your state's secretary of state corporations division website. Most secstate websites provide all the forms you need to create a llc.

Not at all?

Even online a lawyer will be a lawye rand wont work for free just because you are not having money. That simple.

Get real. Get a job. get some money. if you need legal advice better start searching for some. There may be free options out there. But the internet won't magically make lawyers stupid enough not want to get paid.

Plus, what "no money"? You plan starting a restaurant business.

I don't mean to say that I want to get lawyer work done for free. I am not aware of any other person in my network who faces this kind of situation. So I need guidance before I seek a lawyer. It's a matter of treading carefully. Thanks for your reply! – Sid Jul 20 '11 at 5:20

i don't every person always need a lawyer to set up an LLC. yes you are a foreigner in USA but do more research how to set up an LLC in the USA. I do believe every state has their own requirement.

do some research and go to immigration for consultation...good luck

Keep in mind starting your own business may be in direct violation of your STUDENT visa which could get you deported. Sounds like you need a good lawyer - well worth it if "treading carefully" is your true concern here.

LegalZoom is typically lower cost than hiring an in-person lawyer. They cut costs by offering a bunch of standardized services.

You might also try checking out LawPivot. Wired profiled them a few months ago. The site allows you to ask questions and receive basic answers for free from lawyers. Lawyers use it as a marketing tool to presumably get more business down the road.
