You need to state how familiar you are with non-profits before we can recommend stuff to you... I have a great link for you on non-profit web design:

http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/05/14/non-profit-website-design-examples-and-best-practices/

But who knows if it's useful to you since you do not say how much you already know...

gmagana. thanks for the link. Please checkout my site worldcup2010.dzcus.com it is a site very similar to this one. A stackexchange community site. I think it has the potential of being a great tool to promote a social agenda. but the only way a site like this can succeed is if it is a non-profit. I want the goodwill of all those around so that they will be excited to contribute. My aim is not to make a profit I just want it to succeed and make an impact. Come to think of it answers.onstartups.com is a goodwill site and well suited to be a non-profit. – mathaix Oct 29 '09 at 15:26

Does not look like there is much interest for non-profits/social enterprises in this forum. Anyway I looked around and found SERI. (Social Enterprise RhodeIsland) Here is a link to some non-profit, social enterprise books.

LOL -- marking your own answer as the best answer -- that's one way to generate rep. Good thinking! :)
