Answers OnStartups is a question and answer site for entrepreneurs looking to start or run a new business. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I am working on a startup / home business / online business, and have some very solid web application development skills. This will be a service based online business and I am looking for some good solid articles on writing an effective business plan (preferably in the the area of home based online businesses). I am not looking for templates, rather information that I need to research and information I need to cover in the business plan.

What's the purpose of your business plan? – JeffO Jul 7 '11 at 22:50
@JeffOresik much of what I have read about starting a business states that I need a business plan, so my thought is that I want to start a business on the right track. I would suppose the purpose would be an overview of what I am starting, what I want to accomplish, goals, required resources, financial requirements, etc, I don't really know what all it should include, that's why I am looking for good resources to provide information on what I need, why I need it, and how to use the information to be successful. Is that what you are asking? – Aaron Murray Jul 8 '11 at 3:05

Are you trying to attract partners and/or investors? For your own purposes you should plan, but a written plan doesn't need to be overly formal. I wouldn't delay your startup just because you're not able to calculate 5-year projections. – JeffO Jul 25 '11 at 17:36
