I am researching startup opportunities for software products (not web apps). I am especially interested to find software products that cost between 100$ and 1000$ and which make a significant revenue (if this data is available). What I would do with this list is to consider whether these products could be made cloud based, or in other ways be recreated using modern technology.

So far, the best I have come across was this list of Microsoft Products.

@Gary How bad would it be if I cloned a Microsoft product to make it better using modern technology? Microsoft probably has a manual for doing this that has almost been worn out over the years. I do agree with your point, though, that care needs to be taken not to simply destroy the livelyhood of an innovative group of people. – I_like_traffic_lights Jun 27 '11 at 11:53

I understand... I just thought that such a list would be a very general source of inspiration for all the software guys here. It is always good to look at products that did succeed, when considering to start something up. – I_like_traffic_lights Jun 27 '11 at 19:33

You could start by looking for software on sale at Amazon. There are literally tens of thousands of products that meet your criteria.
