I'm looking for accounting software a software developer would be happy with.

  • Available integration with most big US banks.
  • Ability to submit tax forms electronically.
  • An API I can call into to send payments, send off tax forms, run payroll, and monitor to perform custom alerting.
  • Something I can host on a server or pay a fee for a hosted solution.

No programmer would accept accounting software I've seen so far, that requires manual intervention for nearly every task rather than automation and management by exception.

So - what have others found?

+1 for demanding APIs from accounting software. – Kenneth Vogt May 23 '11 at 16:38
and quickbooks doesn't fit your needs? – TimJ May 26 '11 at 4:34
Where are you based? What places do you need to submit tax returns for? – Ian Ringrose May 26 '11 at 15:55
Filing tax returns on line by hand is not a big issue if you don't have lot of employees etc. The issue is having the information to hand in the correct format for the returns. – Ian Ringrose May 26 '11 at 15:56
A bank is not going to let you integrate with them if you are hosting your own instance, unless you are already a big player. – tinny May 26 '11 at 21:21

Check out Xero.com. Very robust API. Out of the requirements you posted, the only one I'm not sure about is filing tax returns through the app.

Xero + Bank Feeds (Xero Feature) == Best Accounting Experience Available – Kyle West May 27 '11 at 3:32
Yes, I actually counted Xero out specifically because it does not support filing taxes automatically. We have to file quarterly and it's a nuisance I consider a must-have for automating away, unfortunately. – Chris Moschini Jun 3 '11 at 22:24
