Answers OnStartups is a question and answer site for entrepreneurs looking to start or run a new business. It's 100% free, no registration required.

I've built a new developer website and have found some companies willing to discuss some sort of partnership. These are companies that sell products that would normally be advertised on sites like mine.

However, my traffic is only around 4,000 page views per week and my goal is to get these companies to give me a few thousand dollars a month.

What can I offer them in return for this money? Here's what I've brainstormed so far.

  • A run-of-site banner ad.
  • A news article every month or two about their products or company.
  • Perhaps a couple of articles that describe using their products.
  • List them as a partner of the site (if they want).
  • A commitment to continue advertising after my site's traffic grows and the site becomes self-sufficient. (I'm really not sure what this commitment should look like.)
  • Part ownership of the site?

At a time when money is so tight, which of these make sense to get them to part with their hard-earned money? Anything else I could offer?

One thing I did in my popular laptop forum, was have a 'sponsored' section, with a subforum dedicated to talking about our sponsors' products. My members could discuss and ask questions directly to the people who sold them and the sponsor could advertise and educate their demographic directly through the forum.

It turned out to be win-win for both of us, hopefully it could fit into your site.

But I doubt you get paid thousands of dollars (a month) for what at the end are like 30 visitors a day. The OK does not ask for sound advice, he asks for someone spending 100 itmes going rate. – NetTecture Jun 12 '11 at 10:27
Well it depends on the size of the site, we earnt $1500 a month because we were getting around 18k unique a day across the site. – Dunhamzzz Jun 12 '11 at 11:51
But the poster wants "thousands" of dollars (more than 1500) with 4000 views (not even visitors) a week. See the problem here? You had like 31.5 times the traffic minimum (probably a lot more, as a visitor likely makes quite some views) and did not get "thousands" of usd (which I would put at lest to 3000-4000). – NetTecture Jun 12 '11 at 12:31

Work for them. You know. Like doing work.

However, my traffic is only around 4,000 page views per week and my goal is to get these companies to give me a few thousand dollars a month.

Tell them. At least someone gets a good laugh out of that delusion. Sorry, but more thn a dollar per page view is highly dilusional.

At a time when money is so tight, which of these make sense to get them to part with their hard- earned money?

Delusion 2: this has nothing to do with money being so tight at the moment. You just ask for 100 times normal rate. Only idiots would pay that, money tight or not.

Seriously, what do you expect? Successfull blogs make money. But they have thousands of visitors per day, not 4000 per week, and views on top (i.e. one visitor may be many views).

Thanks for offering nothing to the discussion other than just being a jerk. Are you saying, in the history of investors, no one has ever offered more money than something was currently worth with the expectation it would some day be worth more? Some people just can't get their thinking outside the box. – Jonathan Wood Jun 11 '11 at 15:52
Asking for delusions to resolve makes YOU a jerk. What should be worth thousands of USD when you get like - 30 visitors a day? Build the side. Outside the box? Clue - get an idiot wasting his money on you? That whas you look for? You simply dont have ANY traffic wotrth a cent yet. – NetTecture Jun 12 '11 at 10:26
