I am working on a widget that shows a story of a hike on a google map.

What I am wondering is - other than asking people one by one, how do I get outdoor bloggers to use my widget on their sites?

Any suggestions would be appreciated :)

You could also turn it into a google gadget. If you have used igoogle, it has various gadgets for all kinds of purposes and they are embeddable on any web-page. I would encourage you to create this google gadget and blog more about it.

Also, you can go to meetup.com and look for hikers' meetups and share your widget link there. People who are really interested in meeting up hiking may also be interested in getting your widget.

+1 for the meetup suggestion. – Ricardo Apr 18 '11 at 1:51
i like the twitter suggestion by @Ricardo, however, i am not able to vote it up... due to my reputation being only 11... – Sarthak Dudhara Apr 18 '11 at 3:12
Both suggestions are good. Approaching meetup people is tricky though...they can get obsessive about the sanctity of their group ;) – Genadinik Apr 18 '11 at 5:08
@Genadinik i agree.. it can be tricky... – Sarthak Dudhara Apr 18 '11 at 5:30

Tricky or not, you'll never know if it works if you don't try it ;) – Ricardo Apr 18 '11 at 13:40

You can create a facebook page with some cool presentation. Lots of people would join

is there an example you have in mind? – Genadinik Apr 17 '11 at 20:54

How about just contacting these outdoors bloggers and ask them about it? asking them directly is the easiest way in my opinion.

Also, give it some time and keep blogging about it, monitor twitter for hiking related stuff and mention your widget, if you have enough tweets and blog posts about it, Google will eventually pick it up and your information about your widget will start appearing in google searches.

In reality it is all super time consuming and much less effective than I think you make come across. This is where an innovative approach to this might really help. – Genadinik Apr 18 '11 at 5:09
I disagree. Contacting bloggers at a more personal level such as a direct email, phone call or even in person (if possible) works. Yes, it might be more time consuming, but it is definitely more effective than just throwing links to a large crowd when they don't know your product or service. – Ricardo Apr 18 '11 at 13:43
