Jon Udell is an excellent "screencaster", he has great examples and resources for screencasts, you can have a look at his delicious bookmarks http://delicious.com/judell/screencast . In the free range of price DebugMode Wink is a great tool.

thanks for the info...i really like this...the only thing i didn't see in the service is the ability to zoom in...am i wrong about this? – Drew Little Oct 23 '09 at 21:22
Im not sure about the zoom ability, but off the top of my head I would say you could do all the zooming in a simple post production editing. After you download the .mov file that you make from screentoaster, import it into a simple video editing program - Mac's make this simple (if you or a friend has a mac) and zoom in where it needs it. – Adam Webber Oct 24 '09 at 1:44

Like the others have said, Camtasia is great, and should have most everything you need. However, with a price tag of $299, you may want to check out Jing (both from http://www.techsmith.com), which is free if you just need something simple. For Mac users, Screenflow is the way to go - http://www.telestream.net/screen-flow/overview.htm.

For a longer list of free screencasting resources, although a little dated, here is a list of 12 screencasting tools from Mashable - http://mashable.com/2008/02/21/screencasting-video-tutorials/.

If you'd rather not do it yourself, Demo Duck - http://www.demoduck.com - offers a relatively affordable custom screencast service using professional voice overs.
