What are the 5 must-do basic things to have a shot at being marginally successful on a first day web site launch? The measure of success is defined (in our case) as at least having:

1) 50000 hits on the first day, 2) 10,000 Unique Visitors 3) Avg time on Site: 3 min

If the above 3 things are accomplished, it would be a success on our first day

By launch do you mean going from 0 to 50,000 hits in one day? That doesn't really sound like a reasonable expectation IMO. Even if you do pull it off, I doubt it would be sustained. – Davy8 Jan 9 '11 at 18:44
Thanks for the opinion. I have done a lot pre-marketing prep and found that comparable sites in our category have actually succeeded with far more than 50000 hits on their first day. My estimates were very conservative but I guess you see it differently. – Donald Jan 9 '11 at 19:08

its all relative to what market you are in and how much you can spend on building buzz for your product. I personally care less how many hits or vists we get, to me its all about the quality of users and paid subscribers. – Frank Jan 9 '11 at 20:50

+1 on what frank said - who cares about how many hits - are they going to generate revenue? – TimJ Jan 10 '11 at 6:24
It's a step by step approach. You have to start somewhere. revenues cannot be generated w/o hits, hits cannot occur w/o visits to the site. I see your point, but first and foremost we are just trying to build an audience here – Donald Jan 10 '11 at 9:07

"If you build it, congratulations, but don’t expect too much. If you build it, market it, support it, monitor its publicity, and keep improving it, then they will come, slowly, in fives and tens. Each new subscription is proof that you’re getting somewhere. The trick is ensuring constant growth, and that takes hard work."

From my personal experience I'd recommend reading this article on patience and hard work.
