Just downloaded to Kindle. – JeffO Aug 25 '10 at 19:32
Absolutely. You can also read "50 scientifically ways to be persuasive" which is very similar to "Influence" but with less background and details. – A. Garcia Apr 15 '11 at 15:32
I am lecturing engineering students on social psychology. I use cialdini book as a reference, as well as many others (batson, latane, Joule & Beauvois). The thing is that it is useful for marketing, but also for project management and for change management. – Sylvain Peyronnet Apr 25 '11 at 19:37

A similar question (on social media marketing books) was asked previously. The top results were:

  • Dharmesh's Inbound Marketing
  • The Whuffie Factor by Tara Hunt

Also check out this other question - a good list of books.

For a specific type of business (service, product, etc) or just general? That will really affect my answer.

"Best" is tough so I'll give the three (four) that had the biggest impact:

  • Crossing the Chasm by Moore. Taught me principles about marketing and business strategy and positioning that I cite and use to this day.

  • Selling the Invisible by Beckwith. More true than ever.

  • The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing & Positioning: The Battle for your mind by Trout/Ries. Basics of branding and marketing. Building a foundation.

Sorry I couldn't pick one but these three (four) really had the biggest impact.

Cheers!

Some of my favorites are:

  1. Crossing The Chasm

  2. New Rules of Marketing and PR

  3. Positioning

  4. Influence

There are many but to pick one I'll have to go with Made to Stick.

Cashvertising is a really solid book about marketing/advertising.

The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing All Ries & Jack Trout

I too loved this book even though some of the purported laws do not seems to hold, in particular the first (The Law of Leadership: It's better to be first than it is to be better). Many observers say this hasn't really been true over the past twenty years in the tech and internet sector.

Another vote for Made to Stick and 22 Immutable Laws... other books that I really enjoyed were Groundswell and Empowered (both are more focused online). My new addition to this list is Why Killer Products Don't Sell. It's a really helpful book for disruptive technology companies trying to figure out how to better sell their product (essentially by better supporting their market).
