Answers OnStartups is a question and answer site for entrepreneurs looking to start or run a new business. It's 100% free, no registration required.

We've yet to start beta, as we would first like a large user base to start with. But our conversion rate to sign up for beta isn't the best. Any advice on that front is appreciated.

Signups work for me now. Not sure why did not work before. Is it because before I tried using a temporary email address? Anyways, sorry for the inconvenience. – BhargavPatel Aug 19 '10 at 16:30

I tried your web site and the sign up works correctly (as far as I can see).

However starting from the top:

  1. Your logo is unreadable
  2. You do not explain well what your site does or how it benefits me
  3. The English on your main page and the page you see after sign up is poor

So why should I sign up?

Thanks for the feedback. I will have a professional redo the logo when I am able to. Do you have any particular suggestions as to explanation of what the site does? Was it unclear? Lacking some information you wished to know? As for the English, I tried to keep it casual on purpose. It was fully intentional, but you're right, it may be hurting conversions. – ehsanul Aug 19 '10 at 3:50
+1 You stole my words :) – BhargavPatel Aug 19 '10 at 16:30
Your web page looks nice- so it's not all negative comments here. But- "A new way to browse the web" makes me ask- is this a new browser? What does your idea do? How does it benefit me? If you can't explain those two things to me on your web page, I'm not going to sign up. – Gary E Aug 19 '10 at 21:09
Thanks for the compliment! The explanation was "You're on some web pages. Jellly gives you related pages." However, that may not be clear enough, which is why there was a pointer to the FAQ. However, most people don't check the FAQ. I don't know how to explain it better honestly, I went through many revisions. We're going to add a link to a small demo to show how the application might be used. Do you think this would help? Here's a first draft of the demo (intro/explanation will be added to it): prettyobscure.jellly.com – ehsanul Aug 20 '10 at 8:23

Its because your website doesn't work. I tried pressing the signup button and nothing happens. You want to test your website first before asking this question. Once you make sure the signup works. I can help you.

Generally you'll only have to change some minor things to increase conversion rate but first of all, make sure the signup works. If it works for you, clear your chache and cookies and try again. It didn't work for me.

If it is a problem with the signup, then wait it out. Keep us posted and let us know if you still have bad conversion rate.

Thanks. I have 51 people signed up already, even got 2 new ones today, so I don't get it. Can you please let me know your browser and OS? I did test in FF/Chrome/IE, but I may have missed something. Thanks! – ehsanul Aug 19 '10 at 3:46
