I think that this should be a community wiki. – milesmeow Sep 22 '10 at 3:37

It is if it's good. – JeffO Aug 11 '10 at 18:33

Are you sure you want to build a business web site with "free" icons? How do you know the free icons weren't stolen? If they were stolen you will be the one who gets into legal trouble when your site becomes popular and the stolen icons are recognized.

You are far better off buying the right to use icons on your web site.

Sometimes, buying icons does not guarantee you that they are not stolen. – Ross Aug 11 '10 at 8:43

There are plenty free icon resources that are original and high-quality. In most cases, you have to attribute them to the author, and that's it. – Dario Solera Aug 11 '10 at 12:16
Buying may not guarantee the icons are not stolen. But the likelyhood an icon is stolen goes up exponentially when you switch from purchased to "free". There is alsoa a big difference when you have to defend yourself in court for copyright violation. In one case you have a purchase contract and in the other you have "free". – Gary E Aug 11 '10 at 15:04

Is this a theoretical risk or something that you have seen occur to someone who used free icons and later found out that the provider wasn't the owner? – John Bogrand Aug 11 '10 at 16:51
good discussion. without having looked into the options provided below, i think i should be able to get a good idea of which ones may be stolen and which are not. but i will tread lightly, thanks – jim_shook Aug 11 '10 at 20:49

very cool, thanks! – jim_shook Aug 11 '10 at 20:49

The classic famfam icons are a great place to start. These are widely used and definitely not stolen. I'm not sure if this set of icons really fit your needs but there is a pretty wide range of them.
