I was looking into the accounting software market on the big G, and was able to find many solutions for the US market but minimal suggestions/reviews appropriate for businesses in India.

What do you guys use for accounting purposes in India? Any pointers would be helpful.

Hi Ankur, and welcome to this site! :-) I can't help you I'm afraid, but are you looking for an online (webapp) solution, or something to install locally (on a Windows PC)? Jesper, Thanks for your reply. I normally prefer desktop apps but I can go with online solutions also as long as it fit my simple needs. I would definitely like to explore the online payment handler thingie. – Ankur Jain Aug 11 '10 at 6:25

Tally is pretty much the standard among small and medium size businesses here.

tally is pretty good in the sense its cheap and they have support as well as most accountants know hoe to use it. If you're a small company, this should suffice

Ankur, Use Tally or BusyWin both are most widely used by small & mid size Indian companies. Best Of Luck.

I'll say go for web apps, as they are easily accessible from any where and there are some nice finance management apps available and you can tweek it as you like:

1- Outright

2- Mint

Xero is fairly well geared toward multiple currencies - not sure how well it works for your particular purpose.

Gnucash?

Haven't used it, but got to like the price.

Not sure if there are specific requirements for India (weird sales tax calculations?), but it does do multi-currency.

Main difference between countries is support for automatic sales tax calculations and reporting, and integration with local bank payment systems. If you don't mind splitting out sales tax by hand using standard book-keeping techniques, and doing your own online banking transactions, pretty well any accounting software should port between countries.

The Canadian version of Quickbooks has a demo you can download and try if you search hard enough. (The link is on the right hand side). Can't find the equivalent download on the US or UK sites, but there probably is one. (Warning: Canada has a very bizarre combination of federal and provincial sales taxes. Depending upon the sales taxes in India, UK or US version may be a better match).

You can try ZOHO Invoice as well as they support Indian currency and market.

Try http://www.intuit.in. It is a very good software for people who doesn't have accounting background. Currently they are offering 1 year free subscription for quickbookplus online version. I am currently using it and very much satisfied with the features.
