What do you guys think of the name Next Gig? Building a new web app for people to find new gigs... in a unique way. Right now I am interested in knowing what this name means to you. I own the domain name nextgig.co - is that an OK name?

Thank you for your feedback.

What kind of gigs are you talking about? – Susan Jones Aug 6 '10 at 7:12
Who is your audience? Americans? Gig doesn't sound very catchy to me. Also, if you are targeting non-English speakers, make sure Gig doesn't have any weird meaning in other languages. Good luck. – A. Garcia Aug 9 '10 at 20:06
Music related gigs. – Ricardo Aug 10 '10 at 4:40

If you're referring to musical gigs and not part-time work gigs, then NextGig.co doesnt sound bad.

The downside of that name is that you will definitely lose a percentage of traffic to the NextGig.com website. However, if NextGig.com has excellent optimization for search engines, you can actually benefit from it.

At the end of the day, it's entirely your call but I would brainstorm for some more names first. Off the top of my head, here are a few that you can maybe play around with: GigFinder, TheUltimateGig, iGig, GigME, myGig, NearestGig.

Good luck!

First thing off the top of my head for "gig" is music related...

Good Luck!

I like them name.

.co is suddenly popular. Still, unclear whether consumers will "get" it.

I think you'll lose a lot of traffic to the existing nextGig.com blog.

If the .CO TLD flops, then you'll be stuck with a company name that you don't have the domain for.

Maybe try to buy the .COM from the existing owner.

that is definitely an option - thanks for the feedback! – Ricardo Aug 7 '10 at 5:17

I don't like ".co". i'm not crazy about any tld other than ".com", but of all the other's, I think ".co" is the worst. Why?

  • It's the same first 2 letters as com! You will A-L-W-A-Y-S have to note that when imparting the url verbally.

  • In written form, mainstream users will likely wonder if its a typo.

  • When I'm typing the url, because of years of conditioning, by the time my fingers hit ".", then "c", followed by "o", you can bet muscle memory kicks in and i type the "m".

Horrible. Use a country domain or ".net" if you must, but, as rule, always bet on .com

Good name, terrible tld.

.co looks like a typo for .com or the domain for columbia (which it is), so unless you are selling to South American musicians or bad typists...

.net / .org are better that .co, but .com with an alternate name might work too.

Think also about the prospects for SEO.

  • What will potential users type to try and find you?

  • "Next gig" gets 21 million hits on Google, with nextgig.com at the top. Are the people typing "next gig" your potential new customers? Or would they be typing something else.

  • Are you aimed at musicians looking for a place to perform, or for music lovers to find the next gig by their favorite artist?

As to what the name means to me, I took the name as that of a site for musicians looking for their next gig, rather than a site for music lovers looking for the next show/concert of their favorite group.
