Get a merchant account and accept credit cards. Country of origin shouldn't be an issue. I can't imagine PayPal being limited either (I called their toll free number; India should not be a problem.).

PayPal's "Payments Pro" is what you'd use from PayPal, and it is limited to continental US only. I don't know about US banks and their merchant accounts, but I know that European banks have strict "know thy customer" policies after 9/11 and the global tax evasion crackdown. Over here, a foreigner can't just fax some papers to a bank and open an account. I don't know how a developer in India would accept credit cards, but I guess they have their own banks & gateways located in India for this... – Jesper Mortensen Jul 14 '10 at 14:10
I'm assuming retailer in India take credit cards from foreign customers? Maybe I need to check a travel guide or this is not the same thing? – JeffO Jul 14 '10 at 14:41
According to their sales rep, India is not a problem. – JeffO Jul 14 '10 at 14:49

PayPal Pro is not restricted to Continental US, though it is not available in India as far as I know. It is available in the UK and Europe and can take payments from any country (barring a few like North Korea, though depending on country some card types are restricted so in UK you can't take AMEX). For Europeans they may also wish to check out PayPal Pro Hosted. This provides some of the flexibility of Pro and the white labelling while avoiding a huge part of the PCI-DSS requirements that go with it. – Tim Nash Jun 9 '11 at 7:40

Use

  • recurly.com or
  • chargify.com

To handle your recurring payments. They can connect with most major merchant accounts. So whether it's PayPal, Authorize.net or whatever is popular in your area.

Getting a merchant account with normal rates to accept US$ is nearly impossible for a foreign entity or individual. I suggest paypal only as a solutions, just paypal business with entity based in India (you will not get Pro -merchant- account).
