If you're willing to try something hosted, try Google Apps. Standard Edition is free for up to 50 users. |

Enterprise Content Management is a bit difficult to define, since many CMS (content Management Systems) like drupal, joomla, aliro, etc. are being used by enterprises. Documentum is typically associated with ECM. OpenText is another. Alfresco would be a good one to look at as a comparison to both sharepoint and standard CMS'es. Main advantages of ECM over CMS solutions is workflow processing and multiple layers of integration into large document repositories. Hope this helps.. |

If document management is your need, Xerox offers a platform called Docushare that integrates with their small-car sized multifunction printers. Everything from scan-to-desktop to scan-to-Docushare repository. Definitely not open-source, but worth a look. Documentum is another system I researched around the same time. |

Alfresco is the best choice! It is open source and plus you have a free community version to play round with it (in many cases good enough for everything!). Please let me know if you could help you more with Alfresco since we implemented Alfresco in many enterprises i EU. |

If your still a startup with 10 or less people I would recommend Confluence its made by Atlassian. For a 10 user licence its only $10 so its perfect for startups and the $10 goes to charity. In the last major media company I worked for we used Confluence It was a really easy tool to use and learn. |

Sharepoint has some workflow features, if you don't need them you can use Google Sites, that it's included in Google Apps. |
