How do i find a fair starting salary for a chief scientific officer?

The company is a biotech start-up that has series A funding and located in the Bay Area

Payscale (http://www.payscale.com/) is a pretty great way to get salary comps. It takes a few minutes to walk through their questionaire, but the quality of the results tend to be worth it.

The payscale.com platform requires a significant amount of information about the profile of the candidate in order to get a "free report" on the value of the position. This may not provide information which would allow for the determination of a fair starting salary to make as part of an offer or a budget by a start-up. – Joseph Barisonzi Oct 26 '11 at 0:03
